About Us
St. Michael's Special school was sanctioned in 1981. Following the sustained efforts of volunteers from the County Roscommon Association with the Principal, Sr. Jacinta Cullinane, a new purpose-built facility was opened in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon 1990.
First established in 1979, St. Michael's is based in the heart of Castlerea town. The Sisters of Mercy donated the site and Sister Jacinta Cullinane, School Principal, ensured that the school would be open, welcoming and attractive for children and parents.
St. Michael's School has been kindly supported by the County Roscommon Association supporting people with Special Needs.
County Roscommon Association Supporting People with Special Needs St. Michael’s School has a long and close relationship with Roscommon Association Supporting People with Special Needs. The Association was the primary advocates for the provision of education for children with special needs in County Roscommon. Members of the Association established the first classroom facility and physically arrived with the furniture to set it up. They advocated at local and national level and have continued to do so for 50 years.
Today they provide vital assistance to St. Michael’s with encouragement, finance, and valuable supports. The Association is a Trustee of the school and has a member on the Board of Management of St. Michael’s. This unique and important relationship is treasured by the School. The school acknowledges that the Association is totally voluntary and has no paid staff. Their time, energy and commitment for students with special needs is inspirational.
The whole community of St. Michael’s School says “Thank you very much !” to All members of The Co. Roscommon Association supporting People with Special Needs
